Alan, I'm curious about how often people are displaying the peace sign in photos. Or does it mean something else there?

The peace sign is something that just about all students do here in Japan. I believe it started a while ago when they saw Americans doing it in all their pictures. Like maybe the 70's. But now it is very much Japanese.
That is the best answer that I can give you.
